Excellence Playa Mujeres

Formerly the Grand Oasis Plays, the Oasis Sens has a chilled-out and romantic environment that’s evident throughout, from the lobby’s sensual bronze centerpiece sculpture to the surrounding quirky contemporary seating. The property was fully renovated in 2011, and the interiors still feel mostly fresh, with plenty of polished marble, huge potted plants, and colorful furnishings. The surrounding grounds are also well maintained, with pathways meandering through manicured lawns and palm-tree lined terraces that lead to a white-sand beach. This all-inclusive, gay-friendly resort appeals to mostly younger, fun-loving couples of all orientations. Note that guests must be 21 or over to stay here.

On a gorgeous stretch of Cancun beach, 15 minutes from the airport

The hotel is situated in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, toward the north end of the Skullcap Boulevard, a long stretch of hotel-lined road separating the Nichupte Lagoon on one side from the Caribbean Sea on the other. The Oasis is set on a typically picturesque piece of white, powder-sand beach which slopes gently into crystal-clear turquoise waters. Besides other hotels, there’s not much within walking distance. It’s about a 15-minute drive to the lively nightlife area, while Cancun International Airport is just 15 minutes in the other direction.

Minimalist rooms with funky mood lighting — though most lack balconies

The hotel’s 388 room are decorated in pale shades and have a minimalist style, with simple contemporary furnishings and polished stone floors. Although the spaces have an austere look during the day, in the evening colorful mood lighting behind the beds can be adjusted to a slow fade for a romantic ambiance or a rapid pulse for a funky disco vibe. Standard amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs with pay movies and iPod docks, while Wi-Fi costs extra and is charged by the day. Rooms have views of either the sea or the lagoon, though only some have balconies. The 66 suites, however, include extra-large terraces and private plunge pools or whirlpool hot tubs.

All-inclusive food and drink in six restaurants, plus eight bars and a saucy nightclub

The Oasis features a well-designed complex of swimming pools surrounded by lounge chairs and palm trees, with views out on the sea. The VIP Pool is particularly spacious and lined with daybeds. The hotel has six restaurants with a variety of cuisine options, including Moroccan, Mexican, and Italian food. All buffet meals and an evening a la carte selection are included in the all-inclusive plan though waiting for a table is not uncommon, especially at lunch time. There are also eight bars on-site with unlimited domestic alcohol included in the all-inclusive plan, but hefty service fees are tacked on to room service for both food and drink items.

On-site entertainment facilities include tennis courts, a spa, and the hotel’s nightclub — Kinky — complete with pole dancing. Guests get free use of a small fleet of smart cars (though there’s an extra fee for insurance), as well as free use of the golf course and entertainment options at Oasis Cancun, a sister hotel a 10-minute drive away.
